Admiral nurses are specialist dementia nurses, working in the community with families, carers and supporters of people with dementia. The admiral nurse has a dual role: casework with individual carers and consultancy and training for professionals. The admiral nurse assists and supports the carers of people with dementia by:
· Completing a specialist carers’ needs assessment where appropriate
· Providing emotional support particularly around changes and transitions such as diagnosis and decisions around entry into care
· Providing information and advice, and signposting carers appropriately
· Helping carers to improve their coping skills
· Facilitating access to services in Hillingdon
· Acting as an advocate when appropriate
The service is unique in that it works with carers and people with dementia of all ages. The admiral nurse also works closely with local mental health services, social services and voluntary sector services.
