The Psychological Medicine Unit provides mental health assessment and management to patients receiving medical, surgical or other care at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Referrals to the service can be made by any member of staff at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists) and both emergency and non-emergency referrals are accepted.
The Psychological Medicine Team includes psychiatrists, psychologists and liaison psychiatric nurses. Following assessment by a member of the team, the appropriate treatment package will be initiated. Psychological Medicine is available to adult patients (18-65) receiving care at C&W Hospital, regardless of where they live. In some instances, if patients' needs are complex and require intensive community-based mental health input, care may be transferred to the local Mental Health Service where the patient lives.
In addition to providing a consultation (assessment) service to the C&W Hospital, members of the Psychological Medicine Team work closely with a number of individual departments, such as Diabetes, Cardiology, Pain Management, HIV / AIDS, Genito-Urinary Medicine, amongst others.
