Service Description
St Charles Mental Health Centre has two acute inpatient wards and one psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU). Each ward has a multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists and social workers; with a designated consultant who has overall responsibility for patients’ care. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to support adults with acute mental health problems who cannot be cared for or managed at home. In addition, patients have access to a variety of therapies and activities. The wards are Thames, Danube (open acute wards) and Nile (psychiatric intensive care unit).
We accept referrals from: crisis resolution teams, duty room, community mental health teams, other hospitals, emergency duty social work team, accident & emergency liaison services, courts/prison (PICU), GPs, assertive outreach teams, police (either under section 136 or informal), relatives/carers via the duty assessment office, self-referrals: 24-hour assessment centre offers professional help to anyone who walks in at any time day or night.
