Shannon Ward is a 10 bedded female only Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit [PICU]. It provides psychiatric care and treatment for women whose acute distress, absconding risk, suicidal or challenging behaviour, demands a secure environment beyond that which can normally be provided on an open psychiatric ward. The main aim is to manage and reduce the risks associated with acute episodes of mental illness. The service specialises in assessment and comprehensive treatment of women with a broad spectrum of acute and enduring mental health needs and it provides care and treatment to in-patients who are experiencing the most acute phase of a mental illness.
