The Marlborough Family Service is a National Health Service organisation staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of child, adult and family therapists, social workers, teachers, nurses, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as a number of professionals in advanced training. Given the varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds of people who use the Marlborough, efforts are made to provide services which are culturally appropriate.

Outpatient Services

The majority of services to clients are offered on a sessional basis as outpatients, usually for one or one and a half hours at intervals agreed between clients and clinicians. Families are often invited together to discuss the referral and who attends then, and subsequently, is agreed by the parent(s) or, in the case of adult referrals by the referred person(s).

There is also some ’Multi-Family’ provision in which group of families with similar concerns meet together

  • 'Stepping into Parenthood' for groups of parents and young children
  • An adult psychosis multi- family workshop for clients and families living with mental illness

The Cultural Therapy Centre

The Cultural Therapy Centre provides a clinical and consultation service.  The team consists of seven part time bilingual therapists from the Bangladeshi, Chinese and Pakistani communities.  They speak a range of languages, including Sylethi, Bangla, Urdu / Hindi, Punjabi, Cantonese and Mandarin and are themselves first or second-generation migrants.  All members of staff have completed, or are in the process of completing, a professional training in systemic therapy.   Some members of the team have also undertaken trainings in other models of therapy, such as Islamic Counselling.  The Cultural Therapy Centre aims to provide a culturally and religiously sensitive service to clients in their preferred language, as well as consultation to other mental health professionals in the CNWL Trust.   Much of the work of the service involves outreach and is community based.
