Parenting and Family Assessment

The Marlborough Family Service provides multi-disciplinary parenting and family assessments which are carried out in a variety of different contexts:  the out-patient setting of the Marlborough Family Service, the family home, school, contact centre and the Marlborough Family Day Unit.  Which of these contexts are actually used in any one case depends on the specific question areas, as identified in the Letter of Instruction, as well as on the complexity of the work required.  The Marlborough Family Service provides assessment in Public (usually care proceedings) and Private Law (contact and resident issues) cases.

The first phase of the work is usually a network meeting. This (adults only) meeting is convened at the Marlborough Family Service and attended by the key professionals and the parents or other primary carers.  At the end of the network meeting decisions are made as to the form and duration of the proposed assessment and this is summarised in a subsequent letter. If it is decided in the network meeting that the Marlborough Family Service will not be offering any further assessment work, the letter will state these reasons.

Some assessment work involves attendance at the Marlborough Family Day Unit (FDU) which specialises in complex parenting assessments, particularly when comprehensive assessments of practical and emotional parenting capacity are required.  Families can attend from 10.00am-3.30pm, for a combination of single days and full weeks stretched over a period of 1-3 months, depending on individual needs and progress.  There is a specific programme which is designed to enable families to be seen in multiple and varied contexts. All of these specialist packages are multi-disciplonary.
