The Riverside Centre is a modern purpose-built unit opened in 2001. The occupational therapy department is well resourced, including a gym and a computer room with internet access.
Staff members include occupational therapists, a senior support worker and a sports technician. They form part of a multi-disciplinary team complementing the inpatient staff who provide holistic care. Sessional workers include a drama therapist, a dance and movement therapist, a yoga teacher and a complementary therapist. There are also service user volunteers working in the Riverside Centre as part of the Capital Volunteering Project.
The therapies team work together with service users to assess their needs and build up their skills to support their return to the community. This work may include the development of daily living activities such as: cooking; returning to work; education or voluntary work; structuring leisure and social time; and relapse prevention. Ward occupational therapists provide an outreach programme, which enables them to continue to support service users - particularly those on enhanced CPA - for up to eight weeks after discharge to help prevent readmission.
