This 18-bedded ward is on the ground floor of the Riverside Centre in the grounds of the Hillingdon Hospital site. It offers inpatient care for formal and informal admissions under the Mental Health Act (1983) for patients with acute or severe and enduring mental illness and aims to support their families/carers.
The key tasks for inpatient ward teams are to provide assessments and a range of medical, nursing, social and psychological interventions that are based on good practice so that the patient can be discharged back home, or to an appropriate community setting as quickly as possible. Most referrals come via the Mental Health Assessment and Home Treatment Team, which acts as a gatekeeper for ward beds.
Multi-disciplinary teams of psychiatrists, nurses and occupational therapists staff each ward, with sessional psychology available. Therapists, independent advocacy and befrienders from the Capital Service Volunteering Scheme complement this multi-disciplinary approach.
The Riverside Centre wards have a light, airy feel with the use of colour, glass and light wood fittings. Patients have single rooms with en suite facilities in male and female zones. These central facilities comprise a non-smoking lounge; dining and beverage bar; laundry; quiet room and one smoking room. Crane Ward has a secluded garden so patients can enjoy fresh air.
